Guiseley boss calls for a big effort

Guiseley manager Steve Kittrick is calling for a big effort from his players over the final ten weeks of the season.

In addition to challenging for promotion to the Blue Square Premier, the Lions are still in both the Carlsberg FA Trophy and the West Riding County Cup.

The three-times postponed FA Trophy third round clash at Cambridge United has started to create a fixture backlog for Kittrick’s men.

The tie has now been re-arranged for next Tuesday and if a replay is needed that will be staged four days later on the date set aside for the quarter finals.

The eventual winners will face either Gravesend or Wealdstone at home in the last eight. They are due to replay next Tuesday after drawing 2-2 this week.

The weather also led to Saturday’s home league game with Solihull Moors being postponed.

Despite the disruption from the weather Kittrick remain philo- sophical. “We can’t do anything about the weather, it is out of our hands, so we shouldn’t go worrying about it.

“We must focus on the challenges ahead of us. It has always been my view that there is no point entering a competition unless you do all you can to win it so there will be no lessening of my determination to succeed in all three competitions.

“We are facing the prospect of playing Saturday and Tuesday every week until the end of the campaign and we might even have to fit in a third game too.”

He added: “In a sense we are victims of our own success. We have to make sure that we are up for the challenge.”

Guiseley, who dropped to third place when Halifax won 1-0 at Colwyn Bay on Saturday, return to league action on Saturday at Hinckley United.

New signing Dean Lisles could make his debut for the Lions. The 19-year-old defender has joined the club after spells with Hull and York.

Kittrick said: “Dean is a big strong defender and he will be a useful addition as we prepare for a busy run in to the end of the season.”

l It was confirmed this week that kittrick has been appointed as a director of Wakefield Wildcats Rugby League club.
