Town hit back to secure victory with two second-half goals

Otley Town 2 Wetherby Athletic 1

Town had to battle back from a goal down to defeat a Wetherby side that had won their last three games at the Old Showfield on Saturday.

Town’s leading scorer Scott Cater was working and injuries to Fred Ash and Danny Chadwick tested the depth of the squad for this West Yorkshire League premier Division encounter.

Wetherby looked the brighter side in the opening exchanges and had some early chances to open the scoring.

Town should have had a penalty after ten minutes when Ben Greenhow burst forward into the Wetherby penalty area and appeared to be brought down from behind, but the referee waved play on.

The visitors took control of the game and Town struggled to get control of the ball and went ahead after 37 minutes.

Striker Neil Dickie found room on the left, beat the defence and fired low passed goalkeeper Gavin Phillis to make it 1-0.

Then the Wetherby number seven received a second yellow card and was sent off, which his team’s followers were far from happy about.

Town stirred themselves after the break and played better. They drew level when Paul Harrison’s corner kick was headed back across goal by Chris Alderston and was slid home by Joe Hendrie.

Town’s winner came from good work from young Sam Redhead and Sam Dexter. Simon Longley netted.

James Davey and Jamie Simms were outstanding for Town who are at home to Whitkirk on Saturday (2pm)
