Horsforth man's body found in River Aire

1:30pm Thursday 2nd February 2012

An open verdict has been recorded on the death of a man who drowned in the River Aire.

Police appealed for information after Trevor Whittaker, 45, from Horsforth, was found dead in the river in May last year.

Mr Whittaker, who had an alcohol problem and suffered from mental health problems was last seen alive in Rodley Lane near the Outer Ring Road.

His body was recovered from a stretch of the river near the Pollard Lane bridge on the afternoon of May 7 after police were called by passers-by.

An open verdict was recorded at a Leeds inquest last week after the court heard it was not clear what happened in the last moments of his life.

Months before his death Mr Whittaker, who suffered from psychosis, had been moved from his home in Horsforth to a nursing home amid claims that he had lost hundreds of pounds to a fraudster.

Yesterday a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 37-year-old man from Bradford was arrested on suspicion of fraud, and he is currently on police bail pending further enquiries.”

There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Whittaker’s death.
